The Value of Loneliness
- By Tejendra Rana
- Published 11/19/2008
This may seem an unqualified statement or is a contradiction of time and space. Being alone is perceived as an un friendly, anti-social or worse, a reflection of pride and prejudice. but whatever it is, being alone can be POSITIVE.
When i was in the high school, i often hear my father and mother discussing about my father's working abroad for a long time. More often than not, my father always have ready answers to any question thrown at him - whether the answer to the question is rational or not or even warped but most of the time it has value though.
Loneliness or being alone is a state of the mind. You create your own kingdom of loneliness - if you want it that way. It is true that loneliness or being alone sets you back but, over time it becomes your necessary ally. That sounds contradictory perhaps. But try to follow this reasoning. What do you do when you miss someone - whether you miss the acts of love, acts of silence and any thing? We even miss some one's smell. Naturally, you don't miss someone if she is close to you - because he or she is there physically present. The basic element of missing someone is ABSANCE. As the old saying goes, " Absence makes the heart grow fonder". This is very true, right? so the argument continues that when your wife or your girlfriend asks about you going away for a job abroad for an idenfinite period of time the most practical and non - debatable answer would be (as my father always tell my mother) " how can i miss you if i don't go away".
Loneliness or being alone is a something we all experience being here in Qatar or in any foreign country for that matter. Surely we are missing our families are back home. However, being away, in fact strengthens our relationship with our loved ones. This is the time to construct a bridge or establish an umbilical cord to continuously link with them. That bridge is communication - the bridge that conects loneliness and happiness. A lonely heart turns to be a happy heart when love is communicated in words through the air waves. Listening to the sweet voice at other end, say the laughter of the children are healing touches to a weary heart.
Whatever you are doing now, pick up that phone. CONNECT and travel the air waves and be "home".
Sometimes, there is an advantage in being alone. It measures the strenght and integrity of the heart

Let us forget lottery, That's gambling and doesnot constitute the elements of a real success story. Rather, let us focus on career and business. So what are the factors that influence success? Before that however, we need to define sucess. Some say success is when you have more than enough money on hand and in bank. Others consider power, influence and properties as success. There are several meanings and interpretation varies from one person to another. for this write up let us refer to success as a progressive realization of a worthwhile pre-determined goal.
In other words to be successful one has to have direction and focus. One has to set goals: where do i stand right now, where do i want to go, when and how? There is no denying that in order to attain success one has to work harder and smarter. But this is not enough. A certain level of education and learning is a requisite. Moreover, the manner by which one does his job, deals with superiors, subordinates and peers can not be set aside.
Not too long ago, i watched Microsoft big boss and founder Bill Gates interviewed on television. The subject: his secret formula for success. In that interview, i recall that the once world's riches man did not finish college. He left school to pursue his interest in computers. His father did not like the idea at first but with the intensity Bill has shown, supported him and lent him some money as capital. That small investment, grew year after year - eventually resulating to the establishment of a business empire otherwise known as Miscrosft.
We can not talk about the details of how the former youngest billionaire's success but in that interview, he mentioned about apititude, attitude and approach. Without consulting Mr. Webster, we would know that apititude is of course the way one carries itself. Attitude is of course the way one carries himself - whether positive or negative. Approach is the way we deal with other people.
Duplicating Bill Gates' success is next to impossible. He may have had a Lady Luck others will never have. However, he can be a source of inspiration to likewise attain a modest level of financial growth. Consider these: Apititude is perhaps something many people have - education, training and experience. Attitude is simply character - being fair, considerate, helpful, sincere conscientious, etc. Approach is style - being pleasant, likeable, trustworthy, dedicated, among others.
Maybe, just maybe, by professionally applying our skills and talents, being a responsible worker and by trying to be nice and respectful of others we will also be successful.
(By the way, no amount of success can compensate for a broken home.)
